MSX-EQ PSG Spectrolyzer Cartridge
What is it?
The MSX-EQ PSG Spectrolyzer is a simple cartridge for the MSX platform that visualizes the spectrum of notes played by the programmable sound generator, such as the AY-3-8910 or YM2149 (PSG).
The cartridge board fits the standard MSX cartridge slot and shows the effect of measuring the signal's level — each reproduced frequency (or frequency range) corresponds to one of 9 vertical LED indicators.
How it works
Based on the Altera EPM7128 PLD (128 logical units), the cartridge intercepts PSG port I/O, identifies the played note/frequency, and displays its representation on dedicated LED indicators in real time. No special setup required — just install into any standard MSX slot with an unobstructed view of the LEDs.
- Visualizes notes/frequencies in games and demos in real time
- LED indicators automatically switch off when a note fades out
- No drivers or software needed
Assembly Options
The cartridge can be assembled in two ways:
- Discrete LED elements — simple, allows various color combinations
- LED bar assemblies — mostly single-colored, clean look
Tested color combinations: blue, red, green (single color), or blue+red / green+red (multi-color, red LEDs on top).
