What is it?

The MegaGRRL Desktop is a hardware VGM player — a DIY-focused respin of the original MegaGRRL Portable Sega Genesis Video Game Music Player. It retains all the features of the original (minus battery power as default), with hardware redesigned for lower cost and easier assembly.

Licensed for commercial production and sales by kunoichilabs.

Play VGM files through real sound chips — no emulation, no software synthesis. Choose from a wide range of authentic MegaMod sound modules to customize your audio experience.

Why did you make it?

The MegaGRRL Desktop makes hardware VGM playback accessible to more people. The redesigned PCB lowers the barrier to entry while keeping the authentic sound chip experience that makes MegaGRRL special. The translucent acrylic protective film gives it a dreamy diffuse reflection effect that looks as good as it sounds.

What makes it special?

  • Real hardware sound chips — no emulation; choose your MegaMod module for authentic audio
  • Wide MegaMod compatibility — supports 13 sound chip configurations
  • SD card VGM playback — optional Micro SD card reader for loading music files
  • Flexible power options — 9V rechargeable battery box, Mini UPS 10200mAh, or no battery box
  • Shell options — PETG shell or base only
  • Licensed design — commercially produced under license from kunoichilabs

MegaMod Options
